Jewelry History From animal-jewelry to body-jewelry
Jewelry is as old as the earliest ancient civilizations themselves when they were made from animal bones and animal teeth.
The use of gold and silver started like so many things, with the Egyptians. They were also the first to start using precious stones and gemstones that included amethyst, turquoise and lapis lazuli. They also started using enameling on jewelry.
The use of gold is a hallmark of the Egyptians, in religious and ceremonial pieces and of course in the adornment of corpses and funeral chambers. Gold was also used to make jewelry for personal use and of course the Incas were renowned for their use of gold as well.
Those early Egyptian jewelers were creative and the main body of their work was making amulets and talismans. Beading also had its roots with the Egyptian word meaning luck, and these strings of beads were made from pottery clay to pearls. Gemstones when used in jewelry were also attributed with supernatural powers according to the color of the gemstone.
The most famous motif from this period is the scarab which is like a small beetle. In 1991 to 1786 BC goldsmithing reached it’s zenith as colored glass become significant and replaced the use of stones. The glass also was used in rings.
The Phoenicians generally copied the styles and traded them around the Mediterranean and further afield. Fashionable and innovative Phoenician women started to pierce their ears and wear gold rings with drop-shaped pendants, and wear necklaces and rings on each finger. The greatest contribution was the use of gold granulation and the creation of the finest gold filigree.
The Greeks added a little to the developing jewelry industry and works generally featured deities and famous people. They tended to utilize gems such as topaz, amethyst, aquamarine and the Syrian garnet. They were master goldsmiths and Greek gold filigree was used to create very intricate pieces of jewelry. Pendants were very popular items worn by women and multiple necklaces were commonly worm also.
The greatest legacy from the Greeks was the cameo, and this spread to the Romans where ladies wore them in their hair and as robe clasps, and military men as shoulder fasteners. The Medieval period did not see very much creativity but brooches were a wardrobe essential, along with jeweled belts. Rings were also common and most people wore them. Rings were made of iron, copper, silver or gold and often denoted social class and status. The late Medieval/Early Renaissance period started to see a little social loosening up and less austerity and necklaces started to appear.
The Renaissance/Elizabethan period resulted in a lot more jewelry use and pearls was a common feature of this. The earring started becoming common early in the 16th century, and in Italy they were commonly plain drop pearls with a simple matching pearl choker. Earrings appeared in England late in Elizabeth I reign, and the Italian style pearl drop was popular with men and women.
The art of jewelry-making was further refined during the Georgian and Victorian periods in Europe and England. Cameos and lockets were fashionable and platinum was first seen. The arrival of the Roaring Twenties significantly increased jewelry demand and also the arrival of Art Deco (Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes) in Paris, and this featured abstract geometric forms and shapes that utilized designs of Aztecs and Egyptians combined with modern art. World War II created a shortage of platinum, and so jewelry was created in gold and silver, and now platinum has become very big since 1990s, and in 2005 it is twice as expensive as gold
