All About Pottery
Pottery and clay-pot-crafts are one of the most ancient of all arts-and-crafts. My first introduction to pottery was also while studying art, I was so lucky that I had a great art teacher I must say, and still I have my first pottery effort, a rather misshapen coffee cup with far from impressive glazing. However whilst my early craft efforts remain at best mediocre, I still have great admiration for good potters and their creative output. Clay-pot-crafts started with simple hand formed clay dishes and pots and then a variety of techniques such as the coil method.
The earliest potters wheel seems to have started with the Egyptians around 2500 BC or probably the technique started even earlier around 4000 BC and then continued on with the Romans. Steadily throwing pots has evolved from heavy momentum wheels that were in use until the 18th Century before mechanical wheels came into being and then on to the variable speed controlled electric ones we use today.
As a note the term “throwing” is attributed to the Saxon word “to twist”. Of course pottery isn’t all about using a wheel, and like many people started using the coil technique.
Getting Started in Pottery
I would initially recommend you look around at your local pottery groups and join them, it is a great way of learning basic clay-pot-crafts skills before advancing into buying all your own equipment and setting up a small workshop at home. You can start by creating garden pots and decorative bowls and evolve into other items as your wheel throwing skills improve. There is something wonderful about the feel of wet clay spinning between your hands and the formation of something beautiful by simple hand pressure, it is a very tactile and sensual pursuit. This site will provide basic information to get started, along with basic practical advice on clay-pot-crafts. Contributors are welcome with useful information and continue a centuries old skill and tradition of creating beautiful and functional objects from clay. There is much to learn about the raw materials of clay, glazing chemicals, the kiln and heating techniques, and a lot more. Most people starting off in pottery have doubts or some trepidation about starting on a wheel or being able to develop some throwing abilities and skills. Like all skills you start with the basics and practice and practice and learn from your mistakes. Like all artisans you must learn about the tools you use, the limitation of each tool as well as the capabilities.
What do you need to get Started in Pottery and clay-pot-crafts?
Depending on your skill level and your budget there are many tools that range from a potters wheels, and kilns to a wide variety of hand tools. These include dipping tongs and fettling knives, potters needles and many sponge types, throwing sticks and loop tools, ribbon tools and cutting wires, turning tools, finishing rubbers, scrapers, a wide variety of brushes, knives and a lot more.
There is also mold making and slip mixing items as well as personal protective equipment such as rubber mating and dust control products, hand creams, safety glasses, back supports, aprons etc. Whatever your skill level in clay-pot-crafts and pottery, you will gradually acquire many of the products available to help you create quality and well finished pottery. What do some of these tools do? 1. The elephant ear sponge is used for the addition or removal of water 2. Wood modeling tools and pencils are used to make incisions or to undercut the base of your new work so you can remove it from the wheel head 3. Wooden ribs that have one curved and one straight side are used pull, flatten or straighten the surface of the work 4. Needle tools have one sharp end and are used for making cuts and incisions 5. Cutting wire or string is used for the removal of your new work form the wheel head
