Wood Working and Free-Woodworking-Plan

About Getting Started in Wood Working

Like everyone we all look for information and a free-woodworking-plan for our projects. I have carpenters in my family and friends who are professional cabinet makers and boat builders.

I have been working with wood and turning down items on a lathe since it was part of my school curriculum and had the benefit of some great and very patient teachers along the way.

Probably my largest projects so far have been the fitting out of a large traditional yacht from a bare hull, playing around with figurehead carving and the restoration of a classic yacht and the one we are most familiar with, the renovation of an old house.

All tasks require a variety of wood working skills. I have a friend who makes the most beautiful furniture, with superb skills, could I make the same, perhaps eventually! There are many elements to becoming a good wood worker and the results are well worth the effort.

Join a wood working group, there is no substitute for learning from all trails and tribulations of others, you will make less mistakes and move forward a lot faster. Advice is free, and good advice will save you money. Obviously investing in some good books is well worth the effort and you should use as a study guide for undertaking practical work. Additionally subscribing to some of the magazines and journals is also a good idea. You will find sources of free-woodworking-plan and project ideas

Start with the Wood Working Basics

There is no substitute with practical wood working. Good wood working skills development is all about developing competencies. There was a reason artisans served 4-5 year apprenticeships and that was to acquire and develop practical as well as theoretical skills about the trade. There is no short cut to acquire skills and it’s about practice and more practice, making mistakes and learning from them. It is also about patience, and planning and above all enjoying working with wood. Like all crafts an artisan is creating a piece of art, and wood working is a form of sculpture.

It is not about production lining your output, but is about quality. The important thing is get hands on wood and start working it. Don’t be ambitious initially, choose a simple project that allows you get familiar with measurements, making or working off a simple plan, and use of a saw, chisels and basic hand tools. Use the internet resources and find yourself a free-woodworking-plan to get started

About Wood Working Tools

Quality tools are the backbone of any project but to use the old adage “A poor tradesman always blames his tools” It doesn’t matter how good your tools are, if you don’t have the right skill sets to get the most out of them you will never be happy with your results. Remember they built the great pyramids using hand tools, so there is no limit to what you can achieve with them.

When I was an apprentice we were given a large variety of frustratingly and deceivingly simple exercises that involves precision use of hand tools. Once you have mastered the basics the tasks will become easier and as your dexterity grows so will the quality of your work.

The important thing is to exercise patience and master these basic tool skills. It is easy to want to rush off and invest in expensive electric powered tools, and these have a place, but they are not a substitute for using traditional hand tools. This is just the start of getting addicted to wood-working. These days you can use the internet to find resources, information, even a free-woodworking-plan, all to help you create lovely wooden items.
