What are paper-crafts and paper-arts?

Paper arts and paper-crafts started with the making of the first paper by the Egyptians and the world was never same afterwards.

Paper arts started with writing on parchments and then illuminated manuscripts and has evolved ever since with a variety of paper making techniques.

Paper arts-and-crafts include a range of activities that include papermaking, paper decoration, watermarking, tissue dying and the Japanese suminagashi which is also known as free-form marbling and uses water suspended inks

About Papers

There are many commercially manufactured exotic papers available and some can be made at home with a lot of patience and skill, and using recycled paper material.

Once a paper is made then the art of paper-arts starts. This includes rubber stamping, the art of tissue dying, the making of wax resist papers, and also making wax embellished papers as well the use of speckling and spattering techniques.

To preserve ancient artisan arts and crafts there is the use of the PergamanoŽ range of products that allow the recreation of the very delicate and ornate 15th century paper craft. This requires the use of translucent parchment paper using PergamanoŽ tools. The delicate pattern is traced out using pen and white ink which is then enhanced using embossing and perforation techniques.

Another paper-craft is brass embossing that uses a brass embossing stencil and the tracing of the design using a metal stylus (and this is also used in scrap booking). Brass rubbing in the old churches of London is also a paper craft, transferring designs to paper

Another popular paper-craft is called Iris Folding that has its origins in Holland. This involves the taping of a pattern to a precut design opening and the layering and taping of folded strips of colored paper over the pattern from the rear to create a spiral like design.

Ornare is another fascinating paper-craft that uses paper piercing, or paper pricking to create intricate and interesting designs. Paper embroidery also uses piercing and pricking of the paper using a special tool and is a great addition to scrap booking, card making and you can buy a a good range of patterns and templates

Books are one of the greatest results of paper making and the paper-crafts and art starts to go into manuscripts, calligraphy, book binding, and the choices are endless and these days creative people are making their own gift wrapping paper, gift tags, greeting cards and of course the start of scrapbooking and altered books

Paper Tole is a 3-D Decoupage paper-craft and this the art of re-creating an art image or picture in 3 dimensional format and this involves the use of 5-6 or more cut-outs from the same print. Again this is great for scrapbooking and card making. Rubber stamping is also a popular paper-craft pursuit. I used a lino cut stamp making technique years ago and transferred this to paper and there are many methods to choose. There are a wide variety of inks and products to allow total creativity, and you can keep simple or get very intricate
